How to Get Started

Outlines the basic requirements to get started. You can apply for a provisional licence three months before your 17th birthday. You must pass an eyesight test (reading a number plate from 20.5 metres away) and display ‘L’ plates whilst learning, always accompanied by a driver aged 21 or over with at least three years’ driving experience. Provisional Licence: Explains the application process. It costs £34 (online) or £43 (by post) and takes between 2 and 3 weeks to arrive. It is essential for taking lessons and sitting the tests.

Driving an automatic car

Advantages: Ideal for those looking for an easier way to learn, as it has only two pedals and does not require manual gear changes. It is highly recommended for London’s heavy traffic. Restrictions: Passing the automatic test results in a licence restricted to this type of vehicle (and semi-automatic vehicles). Coverage: They specialise in south-east London (postcodes SE1, SE5, SE11, SE15, SE16, SE17, SE22, SE24, SW2, SW4, SW8, SW9).

Driving a manual car

Advantages: Learning to drive a manual car means you can drive both manual and automatic cars once you’ve passed your test. Manual cars are usually cheaper to buy and maintain. Flexibility: Intensive courses or weekly lessons (1–2 sessions) are available, depending on the student’s availability. Coverage: Covers the same areas of south-east London as automatic lessons.
